WHO YOU ARE MATTERS

Welcome! I'm Scott Kunihiro, a 22-year-old from the Napa Valley. Being a triplet and the youngest of four, I like to think I come from a big family. Growing up, I played and followed sports and consider myself somewhat an aficionado on the matter. Today, as a business student graduating May, I'm pursuing my dream of becoming the Director of Corporate Partnerships for a professional sports franchise. Further down the line, I would love to develop improved and standardized financial literacy workshops for the professional sports leagues to raise awareness and relieve the alarming rates of bankruptcy and financial delinquency amongst pro athletes. I plan on obtaining these goals by obtaining a position with the Oakland Athletics, making connections within the sports business industry and earning CPA credentials.

My father and I are stubborn and share a love for sports and 60's/70's R&B and Soul music, especially Motown. My dad's quite reserved, unlike myself and my ma who's more outgoing. My mom and I also share a passion for business, a mind for entrepreneurship, and a need for sushi. My youngest sister, Michelle, dreams of becoming a veterinarian and my brother, Eric, is artistic, playing multiple instruments and pursuing a degree in Film. My oldest sister, Taylor, studied business, so it seems as though we got that from our mom.

While I formulate my own expectations and goals, I'd be foolish to say that they weren't influenced by my parents and how I was raised. My dad hoped that I'd take over his orthodontics practice, but I just lack the desire to look at people's mouths all day. My mom used to run a clothing company here in Los Angeles and then became a full-time mom when the two boys and a girl were born.

Tim Platz serves as my non-familial role model. He's arguably the most responsible person I know and has taken me under his wing to help me in my career endeavors and aspirations.

I feel a special connection with the Giant Panda. We like to lay low and love food.

When I was five or six years old, I fell in a rose bush in my front yard.

Sun Sign: 07 Degrees Capricorn.

Moon Sign: 21 Degrees Leo.

  1. Okay Napa Valley is SO beautiful. I'm super jealous you get to live there. I ran a half marathon there in October and it was so pretty. I hope you get to drink wine a lot and eat all the amazing food up there.

Is your dad super hard on you about your teeth? Did you have braces for 90 years? I'm so curious what it's like growing up with an orthodontist. My dad is an orthopedic surgeon and it's been a real treat growing up with him.

Similar to you and your dad, my dad and I also love 70s music. In fact, I DJ at USC and he comes on my show frequently and we play funk, disco, and soul. You should start a radio show with your dad.

I hope you never fall in a rose bush again. That sounds quite painful.

    1. Hey,

DJing? Wow, that's so cool. I didn't even know we had a campus radio station.

The dude made me get braces TWICE when I was in middle school. Lost my retainer and didn't say a word. I'll never forget now lol

  2. I'm so glad to see that we both have a love for sushi. Although I've only been frequenting sushi restaurants in LA for the past few years, I truly enjoy finding a great sushi spot. Please let me know if there's a great sushi spot that you absolutely adore here in LA. I would love to check it out.

It's great to see that you also want to raise awareness about financial literacy for the professional sports leagues. Since many athletes have to retire way younger than the average person in the workforce, it would be extremely helpful if they learn how to manage their money in order to avoid financial difficulties.

  3. Scott,

I find it very impressive that you'd like to help athletes with their financial awareness, as I often catch myself reading stores on ESPN about athletes going bankrupt. There definitely should be a place in sports for workshops to help athletes with their financials and it would be amazing to see you lead these workshops one day. I also saw that you and your father share the love for sports and find it very cool that my father and I share that love as well.

  4. Hi Scott,

I absolutely love your plan about financial training for pro athletes. It seems like you are definitely going to make a major difference in this field. I love the specificity of your goals and think you are tackling a big, but meaningful problem.

It's awesome that your siblings are all following their passions and being successful in their own ways. I have twin sisters, and it is so much fun. I have always wondered what it would be like to be a twin or triplet. I'm curious to hear more about your experience in the future.

I love that you connect with pandas, and love your reasoning even more. Couldn’t have said it better!

  5. It's funny how our parents have such a big influence on our music tastes. My Dad likes music that I would never even know existed if he hadn't introduced me to it, and its rubbed off on me a lot. I was in SF this summer and made a trip to Napa and it was so fun! Not sure who Tim Platz is but he seems really helpful!
